Mr. Duane Schuler

Duane Schuler, age 90 of Atlantic, IA, died at the Heritage House in Atlantic on Sunday, December 25, 2022. He was born the son of Harold and Evelyn (Cocklin) Schuler on August 16, 1932, in the family home.

Duane went to a country school for eight years a mile north of where he grew up and then graduated Atlantic High school in 1950 where he played full back on the football team. After graduation, Duane worked construction on Highway 92 by Carson and on the farm until he was drafted. He served in the Army from 1953-1954 as an MP riding trains across Europe. Duane was home and working on the family farm when he met Jane Petersen from Atlantic. The couple was married on March 30,1958 and made their life on the same farm where he was born. Duane, Jane and their two sons lived on the family farm while Duane continued farming and raising milk cows, swine, and chickens. In 1972 he held a dairy sale and continued raising swine for several years before transitioning to only crop farming. Duane enjoyed playing ping pong and always made sure his sons didn’t get the upper hand. He also enjoyed playing cards and pool with the neighbors. Duane liked fishing in Canada and camping with his family. Later in life he loved spending the winter months in Mesa, AZ and visiting Branson, MO.

Duane was an avid Hawkeye fan, football and basketball and enjoyed starting a conversation with anyone wearing Iowa clothing. He loved to visit with people and never met a stranger. His favorite eating place was McDonalds and the Redwoods for special occasions.

Duane accepted Jesus Christ as his savior when he was 29 years old and was baptized on April 2, 1974. The Bible verses that convicted him were Luke 18:9-14. Anyone who knew Duane knew he always had a track in his front pocket and gave them away freely.

He is preceded in death by his wife Jane, parents, brothers Murry, Kenneth, and Dorland. He is survived by, his sons, Daniel (Sheryl) Schuler and Alan (Diana) Schuler all of Atlantic; his sister in-law Ila (Dale) Pauley and Verna Schuler of Atlantic; grandchildren, Tiffiney (Aaron) Baumgarden and Christopher (Jessica) Schuler both of Kansas City, Amanda (Cody) Will of Wiota, Nicholas (Sydney) Schuler of Boone, Joshua (Cecilia) Schuler and Emily (Matt) Groves both of Cumberland; step-grandchildren, Tracey (Eric) Love of Waukee, Chris (Joni) Kelley of Elliott and Megan (Andy) Mullin of Omaha; as well as twenty great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday January 3, 2023, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic with Pastor Doug Howell officiating and burial will follow at the Noble Township Cemetery near Griswold, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5 pm till 7 pm on Monday, January 2, 2023, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic.
