Helen Hutchinson

February 25, 1930 — November 15, 2022

Helen Delores Tisthammer Hutchinson was born the youngest of six children to Andrew B. and Minnie Tisthammer on Feb. 25, 1930. She was confirmed in South Branch Lutheran Church. She walked one and a half miles to country school until ninth grade when she boarded in Albion throughout high school and graduated valedictorian. She excelled at shorthand and took secretarial positions in Omaha and Denver.

She loved the “big city” life. After four years she dutifully returned to her family farm to care for her ailing mother. One Saturday she took the train to Albion from the family farm. Disembarking in her finest Denver outfit complete with long white gloves, Warren was smitten the moment he saw her. Warren courted her driving 10 miles over muddy roads for dates. Warren eventually convinced Helen’s father, Andrew B., that he was worthy of his daughter. Helen accepted Warren’s marriage proposal “as long as I don’t have to live on the farm.” At age 22, they married on Aug 24, 1952. Over the next five years, they were blessed with three babies in quick succession.

Helen managed the household of three children while Warren was on the road Monday through Friday. In 1960, they moved to Atlantic where they spent 58 years raising their kids and enjoying their many friends at supper club, bridge club and the Country Club. Helen sewed her own dresses for the Charity Ball. Helen took great pride in her volunteer work in the hospital gift shop, PEO and her 12-year career as a AAA travel agent. One of our dearest memories is watching Mom and Dad gliding on the dance floor as they laughed.

Helen and Warren loved Larry, Diane, and Barb very much. Helen was very proud of her eight vibrant, happy grandchildren: Jon, Alex, Alida, Connor, Marley, Kara, Anders, and Braden. Though her children and grandchildren have settled across the continent, we have fond memories of swimming, golfing, and celebrating family holidays in Atlantic. 1412 Hazel was always a happy place.

Helen is survived by Larry and Kim Hutchinson of Denver, Diane and Ross Bjella of Whitefish Bay Wis, Barb Hutchinson, and partner David Paul of Port land Ore.
