Mildred Beatty

Mildred Beatty, 94, of Atlantic passed away Monday, September 6, 2021, at Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa. She was born Mildred Lorene Pierce on October 27, 1926, to Arthur and Sara (Ireland) Pierce on her family’s farm west of Oakland, Iowa.

Mildred attended country school in Washington Township and graduated from Oakland High School in 1944. During high school she took normal training in preparation to be a teacher. After graduation Mildred began teaching country school. During the summers between terms, Mildred attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She later taught in Adair and in Ruthven as a second-grade teacher.

In 1950 Mildred married William G. (Bill) Beatty. They were married for 66 years before Bill’s passing in 2017. During their married life they lived in Ruthven, Mallard, Indianola and Osceola before moving to Atlantic in 1966.

Mildred enjoyed playing golf, buying and collecting antiques, walking, reading and playing bridge. She was involved in the community as a Girl Scout leader and a hospital volunteer. She and Bill delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. After Bill retired, they traveled extensively.

Mildred belonged to Chapter AF, PEO, and to the First United Methodist Church of Atlantic, where she was active with the United Methodist Women.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Sara and Arthur Pierce, her in-laws, Alvin and Rachael Beatty, her husband, William G. (Bill) Beatty, her son William P. (Bill) Beatty, her siblings; Edna Pierce, Mary (Clarence) Kunze, Helen (Edwin) Underwood, Fred (Esther) Pierce, Ralph (Junellyn) Pierce and Robert Pierce; her brothers-in-law, Henry (Carolyne) Beatty, Don (Beulavon) Beatty, and Max Beatty, and two nephews, Alan Underwood and Dean Beatty.

She is survived by her daughter, Emily (Bruce) Jordan of West Bend, Wisconsin; her grandsons Jeffrey Jordan of Denver, Colorado, and Nicholas (Erin) Jordan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, sister-in-law Mary E. Beatty of Avoca, and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021, from 10:00 am until service time at 11 am at First United Methodist in Atlantic followed by graveside service at the Atlantic Cemetery. Mildred’s family will host lunch at the church following the burial. The family is requesting all those who are attending either the service or visitation please wear face coverings.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Atlantic Public Library and can be left or mailed to the Schmidt Family Funeral Home formerly Hockenberry Funeral Care in Atlantic.

Mildred’s family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Heritage House for their care and compassion.
