1944 Mrs 2022

Mrs Winona Lutz

April 24, 1944 — July 19, 2022

Winona May Lutz, age 78, of Adair, IA, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.

Winona "Nona" May Hohensee was born on April 24, 1944 in Hartman, Colorado to Jesse Lee and Nadine (Hughes) Hohensee. The family later moved to Lamar, Colorado where Nona graduated from Lamar High School in 1962.

At the roller skating rink in Lamar, she met Robert "Bob" Ray Lutz when she had him kicked out for skating while wearing an upper body cast. They were married August 26, 1962 at the Methodist Church in Lamar. After the wedding Nona started her life as the wife of a career Navy man. During Bob's career, the couple was stationed in the Philippines, Virginia, and California.

After Bob's retirement from the Navy, the family moved to Adair, Iowa in 1983 where they fulfilled Bob's dream of operating the local bowling alley for a season.

Nona worked several jobs throughout her life, but the most important job was raising her five children, sometimes on her own while Bob was on a ship. Besides her faith, perhaps the most important lesson she tought us was always hold on to a Draw Four as long as possible, and hopefully play it on someone as you go out.

When she passed away Nona was preceded in death by her parents, brother Vendel Hohensee, sister Velda Jones, husband Bob and son Boyd Ray Lutz. She will be missed by her sister Wilma Daffern of Colorado, daughters, Teresa Marckmann of Stuart, Tina Escoto of Stuart, Trina (Darrell) Hayden of Redfield and Terri (Greg) Simmons of Dallas Center, grandchildren Christopher Walhovd (Ann), Robin Walhovd, Timothy Settlemoir, Austin Settlemoir (Brianna), Jesse Settlemoir, Emerson Escoto, Emily Escoto, great-granddaughter Emberlyn Settlemoir and countless nieces, nephew, and friends.

Mom was not a formal person. Since it is middle of summer, Those attending the funeral are encouraged to dress for comfort. Your presence means more than your clothes.

In lieu of floral tributes (for the love of God, no plants!) memorials may be directed to The Boys & Girls Club- Central SW at 807 Broad St, Adair IA 50002 or A - C Food Pantries at 401 Cass St, Adair IA 50002.
